I need help. Windows XP chkdsk declared the directory "C:\windows\system32\config" as an invalid directory and saved it as a file. Problem: I don't know how to reverse this.
Problem again: Windows XP won't start up without giving an immediate BSOD that it can't find the registry. |

I didn't know chkdsk took care of errors by moving the file...
Lesse...
I don't remember if there is a way to restore the files. Lemme look on the net for a minute or two.
[edit]
I didn't find anything of importance.
First I performed a net search for "chkdsk recovery" (or something like that)
It output a bunch of links for using chkdsk to correct errors.
Next, I performed a net search for "missing registry XP"
no go. Sorry.
I suggest performing a net search on your error message...and figure out possible symptoms.
BTW, Where is the registry in Windows XP anyway?

Oh don't worry. I fixed the program with a nifty program called deltree.
;D. Turns out it MIGHT have been possible to copy back up files (error message: UNABLE TO FIND HIVE [ ?or something like that]). However to do that, windows XP would have actually had to allow access to C:\, but that's too risky as somebody might crack it, so all access was denied ;p. Anyways, when I reinstalled xp, it finnally allowed access to C:\ becuase I was able to login, but system files and configurations were lost, so it was basically useless. Windows 98se YaY!!
For those of you using another computer and having a toaster screwed with XP, if it actually allows access to C:\, look for a folder... something like C:\windows\repair\backup or perhaps only repair. That should hold the hive files you're searching for. |

Interesting, I'll keep this in mind if I ever have this problem. You never know when these things will crop up.
