This simply has to be one of the best ideas for file distribution.
BitTorrent is a Peer to Peer File Swarming application. This means that as soon as you have downloaded a few chunks of the file, the client will start uploading them to other people, thereby spreading the file better.
So someone would set up say, rag_eng.exe.torrent on a server and people would start downloading. Those people who download will also upload what they have already got of rag_eng.exe, and (as long as they keep their download window up) will continue to upload til finished.
Any volunteers?
Edit: I haven't gone through the documentation yet; for those who are willing to go through with this I suggest you do. I also emailed Gravity about this idea, and hopefully they will use it.

It's a great idea...but I'm sure it'd take longer than a week for Gravity to implement it.
Also, how is the program security-wise?

These are questions you should ask the creator about. But I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability.
I'm not knowledgable enough to say whether or not your IP would be safe from others by using the program. However, since the program downloads the requested file by connecting to concurrent users I would say that your IP is easily revealable. (I assume that you're worried about intruders in your computer; keep in mind that if someone really wants to get into your system they will find a way.)
Spyware there is none of...99% sure of that.
Trojans there are also none of.
I only heard of the program recently as well. Take some time to look through the site (it takes a few seconds to know what it does from the clear-cut explanations given). If Gravity implemented this system for downloading the RO client I'm sure there would be no problems with everyone getting it on the same day as release, and the same thing could be applied to patch downloads.
The best way to see Bit Torrent in action is to download the demos offered on the program's official site. |
