well... either from books, or people who can teach you. if your high school has computer science, you can learn some from there... i took a crappy pascal class my junior year at a community college. this site has some tutorials to get you started. not a bad idea to start younger... i started fairly late. and if you decide to take programming classes at college... they say your not expected to have programming background, but it seems like they teach it as if you've had some. just a warning.

to remove some preconceptions that many people have had of me, i am not a genious, i am not all that special, i am just gifted in being able to easily understand technology. I started working on computers at 5, and programming at 8, everything I know I learned from experimenting and teaching myself (lots and lots of TIME and experience... i have wasted hundreds and hundreds of hours learning whatever subject interests me at the time), I never was one for books... Hm... i have homework due tomorrow in japanese, but dont feel like doing it

i remember when i picked up programming... i was 11 and i downloaded a ripped mircrosof VB 4.0. i then began teaching myself vb. im 15 now and have a *purchased* version of m.soft visual studio 6.0. i have read 2 books about programming, and neither were about vb. one was about java2 and the other about active server pages. i would definitly say that the majority was learned by myself. if any other sources were involved, it would be online tutorials. one site i personally like for asp/javascript/vbscript (and some others) resources and tutorials is w3schools. note that it is only for web programming, so you wont find anything on c++ or vb development.

Guess in the modern world trying out programming at age 5 would be *normal*
(Like umm.... at age 5 I was playing with lego and letter blocks?)
So.. Sasami may say she's not a genius, but she's sure one helluva smart lady!

Sasami... how's your proficiency in Japanese?
(mmm the only measure I'd know would be the Japanese Language Proficiency Test) Or.. issit intermediate-advance kinda level?

my proficiency at japanese is about the same as any of your average otaku except it is much easier for me cause i am usually always listening to the female ways of saying things, I get a lot of laughs when I hear my guy friends say things in the femenine way, unaware. I just started japanese 1 in college and there are 6 semesters of it to take (we are on trimesters in my college.) So I expect to become a lot more proficient. Have already been somehow recruited by the TMML (tenchi muyo mailing list) to help fansub OVA 3 of tenchi apparently ;

it doesnt take much brain power to move a mouse around, click icons, and play games. I didn't start programming till 8. I learned to read and write at 6 like most normal kids (as a matter of fact, many start earlier.)

[edit] and when i say programmign at age 8, that was with qbasic, i taught myself and dinked around with it -.- nothing big.

yeah, if you know one language, you can learn any other very easily, the only difference is the syntax and the core of the final output (c is a lot more optomized).
